What You Can Save by Cutting the Cord on Canada's Cable Companies

Cable can be an expensive service and depending on your viewing habits it could be an obsolete service or at least a service that you can trim.  Cutting the cord on a $90 monthly cable package, would turn a $0 TFSA balance into a $14,706 TFSA balance (in 2016 dollars) in only ten years if you can get a 6% real return on your investments.
You can save money and still view a variety of shows.  You can do this by streaming directly from the TV channel's website, by getting a subscription from Netflix or CraveTV or by using an open source media player to stream your favorite shows.

What you can save by cutting the cord depending on your cable package

Below we have a chart with your potential investment balance if you took the money you save by cutting the cord and put it into a TFSA on a monthly basis.  We used a 3% and a 6% real return.  This keeps inflation from skewing the numbers, on an added side benefit it also keeps our calculations simpler.  The cable bill and your final TFSA balance is in 2016 dollars.

Popular Platforms with Online Streaming

If you can't live without the most popular shows, then you may want to get an account at CraveTV.ca, Netflix.ca or use the Kodi streaming platform.
Crave TV has the episodes, including the latest episodes, on popular premium networks such as HBO and Showtime.  There is also a variety of movies and special programs.  There is a 30-day free trial, so you can check out what Crave TV can offer without paying for the service if you cancel your account in time, otherwise you will be charged $7.99 a month.
Netflix also has a one month free trial.  Monthly plans range from $7.99 to $11.99.  What can you expect?  A variety of TV shows and movies.
Kodi is a media player that you can use to stream files, you can also download some of the videos, but we don't recommend that you do that.  Kodi is free to use and is mostly ad free as well.  A version of Kodi can be installed on any device running on the Android platform.  There is a variety of add-ons that you can install, some of which feature the latest movies, TV episodes and live sports.  Just so you know, some of the add-ons may feature content that the streaming providers may or may not have the copyright license to stream.
